3.  Apache Trail

The Apache Trail was a stagecoach route through the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. It was named the Apache Trail in honor of the Apache Indians who used it to traverse the Superstition Mountains.

Through the Superstition Mountains and Tonto National Forest, the historic Apache Trail connected Apache Junction on the outskirts of Greater Phoenix with Theodore Roosevelt Lake.

The majority of the Apache Trail is unpaved, becoming a dirt road a few miles above Tortilla Flat and remaining thus for nearly its entire length. The part of State Route 88 located east of Apache Junction is designated as such. It is also the primary thoroughfare through Apache Junction, becoming Main Street when it enters Mesa, and regaining its original name as Apache Boulevard in Tempe, where it terminates at Mill Avenue. Prior to the building of the Superstition Freeway in 1992, the Apache Trail segment near Apache Junction was a piece of US Highway 60, which was redirected to the Superstition Freeway.

The Trail winds steeply for forty miles across harsh desert highlands, passing through deep reservoir lakes such as Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. From Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam, the road is unpaved, narrow, and winding; there are precipitous rock drops and little safety obstacles. The trail demands attention when driving, and large RVs, SUVs, or caravans are not advised. Some prominent RV rental firms in the United States prohibit taking their RVs on this road.

In 2019, a large landslide occurred between Fish Creek Hill Overlook and Apache Lake Marina as a result of fires and flooding. This road segment has not been restored and is closed permanently. From the west, drivers can enter Tortilla Flat. Apache Lake can only be reached from the east.
