Tempe Preparatory Academy was created in 1996 by a group of Tempe professors, engineers, and businesspeople who wanted their children to receive the greatest possible education. The founding members considered starting a private liberal arts institution early on. They opted to open to the public after receiving one of the first requirements to operate as an open-enrollment charter school after additional consideration.
Residents of the East Valley received a flier on the school’s “Great Books” program. The possibility to acquire a liberal arts, private school education in a public setting drew families in. Tempe Preparatory Academy opened in September 1996 with 120 students and nine professors after swiftly filling up. The number of students has increased to 450 (grades 6-12) and the number of instructors has increased to 34 as of August 2020.
