5. Carnegie Public Library | 1101 W Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007, United States

The Phoenix Carnegie Library, the first public library in Arizona, opened its doors to readers at a time when people were eager for access to knowledge and information. In 1898 The Friday Club persuaded two rooms on the second floor of Fleming Block near downtown Phoenix with books they collected thanks largely due to their efforts. These volunteers then created an expansion committee that was so successful it led them into moving again just 6 months later from City Hall’s vacant space after the state government moved temporarily out for the construction of a new capitol building where once legislators had been located.

The Phoenix Carnegie Library is not only one of America’s oldest free-standing libraries but also stands as one of Arizona’s most significant landmarks today—the very first public library in all of Phoenix’s history.

In 1908, Phoenix’s Carnegie Library opened to the public. It housed the library until 1954 when they moved into a new location closer to downtown. After this happened and being left abandoned for some time – due mainly to lack of funds- people began looking at what could be done with such an amazing piece of history so iconic that had been sitting vacant for nearly 20 years by then! 

The Arizona State government eventually took over responsibility from City Hall because there was no other option but demolition since restoration would cost too much money even though many locals loved living around the beautiful building whose windows were originally covered up with bricks which now let the light shine through 24 hours a day!
