The B.A.R.R. Program
Skyline High School is dedicated to supporting students’ well-being and academic success. To achieve this goal, they have implemented the Building Assets Reducing Risks (BARR) program which focuses on teaching social skills that can help with emotional regulation and trauma recovery. The school is using a new, strengths-based model to provide holistic education so students can meet academic, social and emotional needs.
-
- Helps with emotional regulation
- A strength-based model for holistic education
- Responsible for educational success
- Promotes the importance of social skills
The program has two pillars that they follow to improve their school: building positive relationships with students and using real-time data. This is done by organizing teachers into teams and meeting once per week with them. They discuss five students who are doing well as well as the five that need intervention in order to keep these youth from failing school or dropping out of high school altogether.
-
- Utilizes behavior sciences to build relationships with students
- Creative, data-driven teaching method
- Engaged, collaborative environment for staff that encourages them to be their best selves
- Collaborative teams of teachers that collaborate on the development of individualized plans for each student

The school’s BARR coordinator works with teachers, parents/guardians, and students to help those who are struggling. This person can coordinate services between the student in need of interventions as well as others involved like a social worker or school psychologist if needed. Making sure that progress is checked on weekly so everyone stays updated is important for this team!
Skyline High School is one of the first schools in Arizona to implement a federal grant called BARR, which stands for “Building Academic Readiness through Rigor and Relevance.” In this program, students have access to AP courses as well as other classes that offer college credit. This opportunity has been proven successful so far by increased engagement from youth who are more excited about classwork and willing to share with teachers. Failure rates are declining too because kids aren’t falling through cracks anymore thanks to programs like BARR!
