About Scale & Feather Meadery

Scale & Feather is a small meadery run by four friends, Ben and Tamara Chaney are high school sweethearts who are going strong with 25 years together. Matt Cross has a decade of mead-making behind him. Amber DeGiso is a graphic design specialist–creates cool labels and logos. They specialize in using local ingredients to produce their products. Chaney and one of the other founders, Matt Cross, took a class at UC Davis to learn more about honey wine. Their first foray into the mead business was making it for friends’ weddings. Scale & Feather Meadery now offers specialty wine flights if you are interested in trying out some varietals of wine as well!  Scale & Feather meads are available for purchase in growlers, bottles, or by glass.

What is Mead?

Mead is a beverage made by fermenting honey. Scale & Feather Meadery in Phoenix produces their meads with fresh fruits and spices for unique flavors! Scale & Feather uses local ingredients to produce small batches of delicious, high-quality mead.

For the uninitiated, mead is like wine made from fermented honey. Scale & Feather’s resident yeast expert Ben Chaney affectionately refers to his giant egg-shaped tanks as “the Dragon Eggs” because they look like something out of an ancient legend! He started brewing at home in 2011 and now he has scaled up production three-fold for this small-batch artisanal drink that can be enjoyed anytime by all ages (well almost).

Scale & Feather’s meads are brewed to perfection, with 11 on tap ranging from sweet to dry. If you’re craving something that embodies fall flavors like apples or pumpkins but isn’t too heavy, try their Basic Barbarian for an autumnal cider reminiscent of warm clothing after a chilly day outside; it tastes just as good when drank iced in winter months! For those looking for more spice than sweetness (a common preference), the pumpkin-spice lover will be delighted by Scale and feather’s signature drink – “Charm Person.” This spicy libation goes down easy whether served hot during these cold days ahead or cold throughout this unforgiving season. The team also makes Great Gathering which is made up mostly of spices plus some tart berries. The meadery also offers nosh boards featuring meat, cheese, fruit, crackers, and local honey to pair with the mead. All of Scale & Father’s offerings are gluten-free.

Scale & Feather Meadery’s business philosophy is to create products that are pure in both taste and appearance while avoiding substances like sulfites, artificial sweeteners, and additives. Scale & Feather Meadery also believes that mead should be made from honey as well as fruit or other fermentable sugars of agricultural origin where possible. Scale & Feather only uses the highest quality ingredients to ensure a smooth, balanced flavor profile in all their wines!

Scale & Feather also has events at the tasting room every month including trivia nights on Tuesdays and live music on Fridays. Scale & Feather Meadery also hosts weddings, private parties, corporate events, birthdays, and more!  Scale & Feather offers a wide variety of flavors that are sure to please everyone in the family or at an event!

Scale & Feather Meadery also offers mead to purchase in single bottles, six-packs, and growlers. Scale & Feather opened its doors in 2019 and has quickly become a favorite local spot for adults looking for something new!
