Things to Do in Sunnyslope

Sunnyslope resembles a tiny town in certain ways, with a lengthy sidewalk lined with wonderful restaurants, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and historic landmarks. The neighborhood is full of unique locations to visit and appreciate, from fashionable vintage clothing to home antiques. Here’s a shortlist of our favorites:

1. Palo Verde Golf Course

The nine-hole, executive-length golf course at Palo Verde Golf Course offers a refreshing break from the traditional 18 holes. Tee times can be reserved up to one week in advance and you’ll never have trouble finding shade on this lighted driving range.

The Palo Verde Golf Course is a par-3 course with the longest hole of 305 yards. It has 18 holes, but all but six of them are under 200 feet long and are suitable for most golfers.

2.Mystery Castle

    800 E Mineral Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85042 

Mystery Castle is located in Phoenix, Arizona, in the South Mountain Park foothills. It was built for Mary Lou Gulley by Boyce Luther Gulley around the 1930s. After discovering he had tuberculosis, Gulley relocated from Seattle to the Phoenix area and began constructing his house out of found or cheap materials. Boyce Gulley passed away in 1945, and Mary Lou and her mother were informed by an attorney that they owned the property. Shortly after, Mother and daughter moved into the residence.

The vast 18-room, the three-story castle is made of a wide range of materials – stone, adobe, automobile parts, salvaged railway tracks from a mine, telephone poles, and so on. It includes a chapel, cantina, and dungeon. The castle’s interior was designed with a large number of rooms, corridors, and stairways intended for visitors. It also features several unfinished parts and wasn’t hooked up to electricity or plumbing until 1992. As the housing boom in Phoenix expanded during the 1980s, new construction encroached closer to the castle and its grounds, making it increasingly less isolated.

On November 3, 2010, Mary Lou Gulley passed away. The Mystery Castle Foundation, a non-profit organization, now maintains the site and has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.

3. Timo Wine Bar

Timo Wine Bar is a small restaurant and sophisticated wine bar known for rustic cooking, so all of the bread, pizzas and main dishes like the wood-fired lamb chops are made on an open fire. Since 2011, Timo Wine Bar has been a tiny dinner spot that also serves wine, tapas, and a romantic atmosphere in the front room and backyard garden.

4. Let It Roll Bowl & Entertainment Center

Sunnyslope feels like a tiny town, despite being in the city and having a high density of stores,  with a lengthy sidewalk lined with restaurants, shops, and home bric-a-brac, all stacked side by side with almost nothing vacant. 1.  Dream City Church – Phoenix

Dream City Church (formerly Phoenix First Assembly of God) is an Assemblies of God Evangelical multi-site megachurch with a weekly attendance of around 22,500 people. Luke Barnett is the senior pastor. Its goal is to bring people together as God’s people, develop a better understanding of God’s Word and grace, and extend Christ’s love to others in Jesus’ name.

2. Most Holy Trinity Catholic Parish

3. Desert Mission Anglican Church

Desert Mission Anglican Church is an important part of the community. Desert missions projects are focused on outreach, hospitality, and sharing Christ’s love with those around them in need – both physically as well spiritually.

The Desert Mission Anglican Church is a place where people can come for spiritual guidance, community connection, and support in their hour of need. They offer childcare during worship services as well as an online prayer meeting weekly through Zoom that connects members across Sunnyslope, neighborhood to share meals while also engaging globally with mission work. Each week, they distribute food and necessities to the needy people in the neighborhood as part of their outreach program.

4. Sunnyslope Family Worship Center, Arizona

Family Worship Center is home to the Arizona District Bishop, Raymond Rodriguez. 30 years in ministry with his wife Yolanda by his side Pastor Rodriquez has been leading people into worship and discipleship through their time at FWC (Family Worshippers Church).

Family Worship Center is one of several congregations affiliated with the Apostolic Assembly in the faith of Jesus Christ.

5. St Stephen’s Byzantine Catholic Cathedral

Byzantine Catholics fled to the western United States from the eastern side and began planning for their church in Phoenix as early as 1956. They formally requested a parish from Pittsburgh Bishop Nicholas Elko ten years later. In 1968, permission was given to acquiring the old St. Thomas the Apostle Antiochene Orthodox Church’s site. The first Divine Liturgy was held on Easter Sunday.

The St. Stephen Cathedral is the mother church for all of those in Phoenix who are Byzantine Catholics, and it stands as a testament to their faith with its beautiful architecture. The church follows the teachings of Jesus Christ as found in the Gospel and passed on through Apostles’ teachings and traditions.

Sunnyslope is also home to some amazing parks, schools, public libraries, and schools for its citizens to enjoy.  These facilities are all world-class, beautifully maintained, and clean so residents of surrounding communities often visit to enjoy them.  Here’s a short list all located in Sunnyslope:

3. Sunnyslope Historical Society

Sunnyslope Historical Society was founded in 1989 and has the goal of recording, collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of this unique community that many people have called home.

The Society, as a non-profit, maintains a community museum and archive in addition to its members and volunteers. The Society also maintains a research library and hosts several events, special exhibits, and programs throughout the year to promote its objectives.

4. Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights

5. Granada Park

Granada Park is a great location for children and adults to enjoy the outdoors. The park offers a variety of recreational features that make it ideal for athletic activity, relaxation and socializing with family members. There are many distinct types of playground equipment available, such as slides, swing sets, climbing structures, sandpits, and so on.

The park also has an off-leash area for dogs. It’s not unusual to see locals walking their dog through the wide meadow or playing fetch in one of the two dog parks. Many people bring their children here for birthday parties since there are numerous picnic tables accessible within proximity where you may set up a table and chairs under the shade of the trees.
