ASU Preparatory Academy – Polytechnic Middle School

You’ll find a personalized path to college and career success at ASU Prep Poly STEM Academy. Their STEM curriculum immerses students in hands-on projects and real-world problem solving, preparing them for college and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

What Students Can Expect

ASU Prep students work to solve real-world problems, whether they are building a robot, developing a solar machine, or developing solutions to conserve the Earth’s resources. Their rigorous curriculum assists students in developing critical thinking and learning skills that will help them in the future. Furthermore, ASU Prep Poly STEM Academy prepares students to collaborate with ASU researchers to develop real-world solutions to make the world a better place.

History

ASU Preparatory Academy was founded in 2008 as University Public Schools, Inc. (UPSI), with its first campus in Mesa, Arizona. ASU Prep opened its downtown Phoenix location in collaboration with the Phoenix Elementary School District just one year later, and that same year began moving its Mesa location to ASU’s Polytechnic campus.

In collaboration with Barça Residency Academy, a third location opened in Casa Grande, Arizona, in 2016. ASU Prep Digital was launched in 2017 on the same college preparatory framework as ASU Prep, with class offerings available online for part–time or full–time students anywhere in the world. ASU Prep announced its merger with Phoenix Collegiate Academy in 2018, and the campuses began operations as the ASU Prep South Phoenix Primary/Intermediate and High School campuses.

Curriculum

The program at ASU Preparatory Academy includes primary, middle, and secondary curriculum that is designed to help students develop:

  • Fundamental knowledge and self-assurance for further study
  • Learning how to read, write, and speak clearly and accurately
  • Critical thinking abilities to observe, interpret, and analyze data
  • Problem-solving abilities, as well as the ability to interpret and communicate results

All children should be able to access the core curriculum. Students who are highly capable and motivated can take advantage of the extended curriculum.

Personalized Learning

ASU Prep provides personalized learning to each student in order to prepare them for college, careers, and life. Personalized learning enables students to learn or re-learn previously missed learning standards.

Providing a variety of student-centered learning environments helps students improve their executive functioning skills and learn how to collaborate in small and large groups.

ASU Prep fosters learning environments that ensure equity and inclusion for all students!

Individual Learning Plans

ASU Prep believes in the importance of positive outcome planning. To plan for these positive outcomes, each student will create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that will guide his or her learning for the entire school year and assist him or her in taking charge of their learning path – thereby creating student agency. An ILP’s overall goal is to establish and maintain relationships with students and families in order to facilitate a conversation about individual students’ academic and social progress, review areas of strength and opportunities for growth, outline goals, and develop a shared implementation plan and action steps for each student. Students will identify their interests, learning styles, academic goals, and the habits they need to accomplish their goals. Students, parents/guardians, teachers, and academic counselors will each support, review, and reflect on the ILPs on a regular basis.

Preparing Students for College & Careers in STEM

A rigorous university preparatory curriculum prepares students to enroll in university classes for credit at ASU Prep Poly STEM High School, which prepares them for college and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students in high school can take two ASU courses for free each semester, for a total of 24 credits by the time they graduate! In addition, our courses provide opportunities for students to solve problems, collaborate, and participate in community service programs.

Student Experience

Students at ASU Prep Poly STEM High School have the flexibility to take their learning anywhere they want with a choice of in-person, online, and hybrid school programs.

Curriculum

The programs are purposefully designed to be difficult in order for students to develop critical thinking and learning skills that will prepare them for success in college. Students can expect to dig deep into concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios.
